Walmart Issues Nationwide Recall of Chia Seeds Over Salmonella Risk

Natural Sourcing International has issued a voluntary recall for a batch of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds due to potential Salmonella contamination. This recall was announced by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on May 13.

The affected product is sold in 32-ounce bags under the lot code 24095 C018, which can be found on the bottom of the package’s back panel. These chia seeds have an expiration date of October 30, 2026, and a UPC code of 078742300665. Great Value, a private-label brand of Walmart, distributed these products through its nationwide stores.

### What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and dehydration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella leads to approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually in the United States, with food being the most frequent source.

As of the recall date, no illnesses or fatalities have been linked to this product.

### What To Do If You Have the Recalled Products at Home

If you have purchased the recalled chia seeds, please check your pantry. You should discard them or return them to Walmart for a refund.
