Landslide Drink

Creamy coffee cocktail in a stemmed glass.

It’s unfair to classify all creamy cocktails as just desserts. Take, for instance, the Mudslide, which is a blend of vodka, Irish cream liqueur, and coffee liqueur in nearly equal measures.

However, with the right balance, a Mudslide can offer a rich yet not overly sweet experience.

Often associated with dessert, Mudslides are usually savored as an after-dinner drink. If you decide to have it as a nightcap, be cautious of the varying caffeine levels in coffee liqueurs which might keep you awake late into the night.

What is a Mudslide?

This creamy cocktail combines vodka, Irish cream, and coffee liqueur. It is said to be a variation of the White Russian, which includes vodka, Kahlúa, and heavy cream. In a Mudslide, the heavy cream is replaced by Irish Cream, a mixture of Irish whiskey, cream, and chocolate, exclusively produced in Ireland.

Although Bailey’s Irish Cream was initially used, I prefer Kerrygold’s Irish Cream for its rich chocolate aroma and taste, and a nice whiskey undertone. It’s delightful alone or mixed in cocktails.

I particularly recommend Mr. Black Cold Brew Liqueur, an Australian product with an intense coffee flavor, as a substitute for Kahlúa. For those interested in creating their own version, a homemade Kahlúa recipe can be explored.

The Origin Story

Understanding a drink’s history adds to its appreciation. The Mudslide’s origin traces back to The Wreck Bar & Grill at Rum Point on Grand Cayman.

A bartender there, lacking cream, used Bailey’s Irish Cream while making a White Russian in the mid-1970s, and the Mudslide was born, quickly gaining popularity.

How to Make a Mudslide

In a cocktail shaker with ice, add vodka, Irish Cream, and coffee liqueur. Ensure proper mixing by shaking hard for about 20 seconds to blend the ingredients thoroughly and achieve the right dilution.

Shaking creates air bubbles, giving the drink a frothy top, which complements its creamy nature.

Swaps and Substitutions

While a classic, the Mudslide serves as a base for creativity. Once you’ve mastered it, consider these variations:

  • Try a frozen version by blending it with ice or ice cream for a chilled treat.
  • For a more chocolate-rich drink, add a tablespoon of chocolate sauce before shaking.
  • Raspberry vodka can replace regular vodka for a fruity twist, complementing the chocolate notes.
  • Consider garnishing with dark chocolate shavings for added flavor.
